I love looking at old photographs. They seem to contain so much character, perhaps because many of the things they depict – fashions, places, jobs etc. – are now unfamiliar. People in portraits or even passport photos from the past are often looking wistfully away from the camera. I think this look is fascinating, because it is hard not to imagine that they are looking towards their futures – which for us, looking at their pictures now, have of course already happened (whether we know or must imagine the details). However dreamy people in old photos look, the knowledge that their futures have already come and gone makes it seem like whatever they contained was inevitable all along.
